Below are the suggested target understandings and skills for second grade visual arts:
  • Making Art and Expressing Meaning in Art - Express warm and cool ideas and things through warm and cool colors. Use an event important to the students as a subject. Create landscapes that show depth by overlapping. Display some textures in landscapes.
  • Appreciating and Decoding Meaning in Art - Create art that has a use such as a vase, pencil holder, etc. Consider why artworks are grouped in a museum. Discuss why artists used warm and cool colors.

SIDE by SIDE TEACHER (or SUBSTITUTE) RESPONSIBILITY:
  1. Be Present and involved in teaching art lesson - pitching in when appropriate
  2. Use BEST classroom management practices
  3. Sit within close proximity of students during demonstrations
  4. Make all possible connections with ART lesson and your CURRICULUM
  5. Participate in your own art-making along with your students
  6. Help specialist when asked - the art room is a paper-grading-free zone!

WEEK OF NOVEMBER 29TH: CREATE A CLASS SONG BOOK


WEEK OF NOVEMBER 8TH: PAINTED PAPERS - 1st and 2nd graders will paint tissue and crepe papers using many different techniques and colors. Paper will then be used to create Eric Carle Art. Bubble wrap will be used for some of the textures. This is a 2 session lesson.

WEEK OF OCTOBER 4TH: Day of the Dead - colored chalk on black

WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 13TH: Meet Vincent Van Gogh (video). SUNFLOWERS!!!
WEEK OF AUGUST 30TH: Students will practice filling an area with lines and patterns on tracing paper over a blackline design - creating an invisible line affect (penguins & butterflies)
WEEK OF AUGUST 23RD: MARK KISTLER'S DRAWING LESSONS (scroll the pencil down for the easier lessons) Do these lessons on the projector. Be sure students are ready to go with paper and pencil. Encourage them to keep their paper straight and remind them that he never stops and waits for them so they must keep going . Have fun with this.
WEEK OF AUGUST 16TH: "IMAGINE, BELIEVE, ACHIEVE" - Crayon and watercolor wash.
