Below are the suggested target understandings and skills for fifth grade visual arts:
  • Making Art and Expressing Meaning in Art - Create scenes with distinct foregrounds, middle-grounds, and backgrounds. Add lines that travel along the surface of objects to show their direction and form. Employ the elements and principles of art to express an idea or an event important to the students. Create an abstract work of art. Imitate the surface textures of objects.
  • Appreciating and Decoding Meaning in Art - Compare parts of an object to the whole to improve their skill in displaying proportion in works of art. Balance works of art by evenly distributing elements on either side of its center. Identify and discuss realism and abstraction.

SIDE by SIDE TEACHER (or SUBSTITUTE) RESPONSIBILITY:
  1. Be Present and involved in teaching art lesson - pitching in when appropriate
  2. Use BEST classroom management practices
  3. Sit within close proximity of students during demonstrations
  4. Make all possible connections with ART lesson and your CURRICULUM
  5. Participate in your own art-making along with your students
  6. Help specialist when asked - the art room is a paper-grading-free zone!

WEEK OF NOVEMBER 1ST:
Finish graduated accordian project. Cut out animals and write script about the animal and its environment.
Peirce and Swallow will work with MEGGIE from Arts Bridge. You don't need to bring anything to class.
WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 20TH: Finish original animal and environment
WEEK OF AUGUST 16TH: Line design for a flag. Begin study of SHAPE.
WEEK OF AUGUST 9TH: Create an "Elements of Art" chart.
WEEK OF AUGUST 2ND: Make portfolios
