“Procession of the Species”
Woodrow Wilson Elementary School’s first annual “Procession of the Species” event held on Thursday, October 27, 2011 was inspired by similar celebrations in other communities throughout the United States, specifically, Olympia Washington. The Procession of the Species is a joyous, spontaneous artistic pageant where community members celebrate their relationships with each other and the natural world.
Because of Woodrow Wilson’s diverse population, Principal Lynda Hart, felt it made more sense to celebrate life on Earth, integrating curriculum and the arts, instead of staging a Halloween theme parade.
The event was created by the teachers and students for the community under the direction of Rosemary Mitchell, BTSALP Visual Art Specialist, and Kelby McIntyre-Martinez, Director of Professional Development for the BTSALP, University of Utah College of Education. They worked with teachers to facilitate seven weeks of art, music, and dance to inspire personal understanding of life on earth and the arts.
Each class chose a curriculum-centered topic of study, enriching it with vocabulary, movement, rhythm, and the visual arts. The procession included seasonal trees, caterpillars, butterflies, frogs and pond life, pollinating flowers, bees, desert biomes, crickets, clouds, seagulls, Utah fish, defense mechanisms – chameleons, crabs & opossums, microorganisms, and sunflowers. Students made their own colorful costumes.
On procession day, students, teachers, staff, and the Toyota Family Literacy parents donned their costumes and paraded through the halls of the GEC, GTI, and the school. They carried banners and other significant props and participated in a cultural exchange honoring the awe and splendor of the natural world.
The procession took place once again that same evening at the school as part of the community’s “Afterschool “Lights On!” celebration. More than 500 parents and other guests attended the evening program.
